Razor Burn & Folliculitis

Razor burn occurs when the skin becomes irritated from shaving. Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicle itself. Both of these skin issues can be problematic for men. Razor burn can typically be prevented by addressing improper shaving techniques such as using a different shaving lotion, a fresh razor, a change in pressure and slowing down. Folliculitis, however, is a little bit more difficult to correct and treat. It is often caused by hairs growing under the skin rather than growing straight up out of the hair follicle.

Skin can become irritated, itchy, red, and in some cases even become infected and form small pus filled bumps similar to pimples.  Men with thick or curly hair are more prone to have this issue. Dry or dehydrated skin can also contribute to the problem.

One technique that can help prevent these conditions is to incorporate a quick, easy exfoliating routine before and after shaving. Exfoliating before shaving removes dead skin cells, reducing the potential for ingrown hairs and allowing the razor to glide across the skin smoothly and decrease the risk of the razor snagging or grabbing, causing razor burn. Exfoliating after shaving helps to prevent pores and follicles from becoming congested with any residue from shaving and also helps to gently remove any remaining surface skin that might prevent hairs just below the skin from growing up through the follicle rather than turning back down and becoming trapped under the skin.

Mineral-Exfoliating-Wash-125mlilike Organic Skincare’s Mineral Exfoliating Wash is a great pre-shave option as it works to soften and dissolve the dead surface skin. The ilike Organic Skincare’s Rosehip Exfoliator is a gentle but effective scrub that can be used after shaving. The Rosehip Exfoliator also helps to soften the skin to allow the hair better access to growing straight up through the follicle, but it also provides an antiseptic effect to relieve inflamed skin. Incorporating these two products into your routine does not require a lot of time. Both can be done with in a matter of seconds, saving you hours and days of irritation.
