Since so many of us sit for many hours on the computer, watching television or at work, it is all too common to experience pain and tightness in the low back region. Sitting for long periods of time constricts the psoas muscle. This not only leads to low back pain, it depletes vital energy, cuts off blood circulation, affects organ functioning and drains the adrenals and immune system. Psoas health affects every level of your well being.
The psoas muscle is the deepest muscle in your body. Its health holds much of your physical, mental and emotional well being. A supple and healthy psoas will allow blood, oxygen and nutrients to flow freely through your body. A constricted psoas will lead to low back pain, tight hips and deplete your immunity and parasympathetic nervous system.
We can experience amazing benefits when we continuously work the psoas in our physical body, but the mental benefits are just as rewarding.
The psoas major is located from the middle of the spine (T12) to the top of the thigh bone. It attaches from the very bottom of the rib cage, and continues down your body, through the core, and attaches to the very top of the thigh bone. The psoas is the only muscle that connects the spine to the legs.
In addition to locking up in the front of your hips, your Quadratus Lumborum (QL) will lock up and restrict blood flow as well. Your QL is the deepest muscle in your abdominal/core area. It's located in your lower back on either side of the lumbar spine. It starts at your lowest rib and ends at the top of your pelvis.
Sitting for prolonged periods of time will overuse the stabilizer muscles of the vertebrae, which in turn will make them tighten and constrict blood and nutrient flow. When these muscles are no longer effective in aiding in support of the spine and lower back, then the QL takes up the slack and overworks, forming painful knots and adhesions.
There are a few modalities that are best in creating relief for chronic low back pain. Finding a therapist who is trained in advanced myofascial techniques is extremely helpful, as well as a therapist who is trained in Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy. These two modalities can do wonders at releasing the psoas and quadratus lumbar muscles.
All lunges that stretch the hip flexor area will help open and release the psoas: runners lunge, low crescent lunge, high lunge, bound lunge, the list goes on...
Triangle pose is great pain-relieving stretch for both the QL and psoas. Always, feel free to ask your therapist for more stretches to help with reducing your low back pain. We highly recommend teaming with both a massage therapist and personal trainer or yoga teacher that can assist in ensuring that you are accessing movement that will relieve low back pain and prevent restriction of your psoas and QL muscles.
Check to see that your computer is in line with your eyes so that aren't looking down. Also, make sure that your chair allows your feet to plant firmly on the ground and your low back is supported by your abdominal muscles and not slouching.

Protect Your Skin
We are so excited to announce our new, organic sun care line: COOLA
Skin cancer is a great concern these days. According to the Center for Disease Control, Oregon has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the United States.
Living in Portland, Oregon, we are all familiar with our long, grey winters. Because we don’t “feel” like there is sun exposure taking place we often neglect wearing sunscreen. However, UV rays are present even when the sky is grey. When summertime comes to our beautiful city, everyone in Portland is in a good mood and wants to be outside! Parks are full of children playing and there are lines for the outdoor tables at all the sidewalk cafés. The eagerness to enjoy and soak up the beautiful paradise results in a lot of sun burnt skin.
Proper sun protection is vital. Every day. All year.
During the month of August we will be highlighting COOLA in our monthly facial special!
COOLA is a San Diego based luxury organic sunscreen company. COOLA is passionate about making healthy sunscreens people love to wear!
Their unique formulations include:
70%+ Certified Organic Ingredients
All COOLA products are formulated with 70-97% certified organic ingredients. COOLA is one of the only sunscreen companies in the world that can make that claim! COOLA formulates with the freshest natural ingredients to insure the most biodynamic results, free from pesticides and other nasty bi-products.
Solar Powered Sunscreen
All COOLA formulas are manufactured in the USA and the majority of their products are crafted in Southern California in a solar powered facility. They use the power of the sun to protect from the sun. How COOLA is that!
Farm to Face
Similar to the Farm to Table food movement, COOLA believes in sourcing their ingredients and vendors locally to promote communities and jobs as well as cutting down on the costs of long distance shipping (both financial and environmental). In addition COOLA can use their platform to encourage and sustain local and organic farming.
Natural Plant Phyto-Protectors
COOLA incorporates natural plant phyto-protectors into all of their products. These ingredients, such as plankton, red algae, and red raspberry seed oil (among others), have innate sun protection qualities and help boost their sunscreen’s SPF value naturally. These ingredients also allow COOLA to limit the number of FDA approved active ingredients they use.
Quick Facts About COOLA:

Breathing is just something that we all do each minute of every day since we were born, approximately 8-14 breaths per minute. Wow! That is a lot of breathing and something we don’t even have to think about. So why would we ask you to become more conscious of your breathe in the massage room? Did you know that most of us practice shallow breathing? Shallow breathing is where we just fill the top part of the lungs and can actually increase our levels of stress and anxiety. Visiting Asian cultures I’ve often been told how bad American’s are at breathing. I found that to be an interesting comment and decided to ask questions and do some research into why that might be.
It seems to start with what American culture finds attractive. Our culture wants to see men and women with flat stomachs; therefore, we tend to hold our abdominal muscles in, forcing our diaphragm to have little room to expand to help fill the lungs with oxygen. I believe you can have a great shaped body, still practice deep breathing and get your body, mind and tissues all what they need: OXYGEN!
When you come in for a massage, usually the first thing the therapist asks you to do is take a few deep breaths. It is amazing to me how many people do short inhales and exhales and voila they are relaxed. Sound like anyone you know? The first thing to do is count. Breathe in for three and out for three. Feel your belly expand and visualize the lobes of your lungs, start to fill the lower lobes first and then the upper lobes. Hold your breath for three then exhale slowly and evenly. This is the start to helping you get settled and relaxed for your massage.
Now that you are relaxed we are able to work on your tissues and find those oh so good spots. However, when we find these spots it tends to stimulate your fight and flight response. Once we see this happening we instantly are talking with you about getting your focus back on your breath. Sometimes we may even talk about emotions that you could be feeling connected to this spot that we are massaging. This is a great way to let go of a pattern of emotional and physical pain that often plagues many of us. Our goal is to never cause pain during the massage. It can be important to help you connect the mind and the body when it comes to areas of pain. Focusing on the mind/body connection in our tissues and our nervous system, can help to reset the nervous system, providing you with a calmer mind and pain free in your physical body. Healing your body of physical and emotional pain is all done by you and we as massage therapists are here to help create a safe and secure environment guiding you through your healing process.
Just let us know what you want out of your massage session and we will do our best to put you with the right therapist to address those needs.

Far Infrared Heat Therapy is known to aid in detoxification, and pain reduction in the body.
Did you know that in the last 50 years we have been exposed to more than 5 million toxins and we are exposed to up to 75,000 of these toxins daily?
As these various toxins enter your body, you either eliminate them or store them in adipose (fat) tissues, as a way to dilute their toxic affects in the body. The buildup of these toxins lead to premature aging, can cause you to get sick and in some cases will cause more serious chronic diseases.
Exercise, coupled with other forms of detoxification, like sitting in a sauna or soaking in natural hot springs, can be effective ways to reduce or eliminate toxins in your body. There is also new technology, called Far Infrared Heat, which supports the body by stimulating the immune system and warming the body's tissues at a very deep level, allowing these toxins to be flushed out.
At Zama Massage Therapeutic Spa we use a “Far Infrared Body Wrap System” that was developed by Sudatonic, Inc. which is extremely effective in detoxing the body. Another way to gain these benefits is by using an infrared light bar that you lie under while receiving a massage.
Detoxing is important to your general health and well being. Eliminating toxins from the body will help us stay health and feel better and younger. Infrared Therapy is beneficial and natural. We receive this light and heat every time we are in the sun. The benefits of infrared heat are numerous.
This relaxing heat therapy is a great treatment for those looking to:
In addition to detoxification, Far Infrared Therapy has been known to help with ailments such as various forms of Cancer, Fibromyalgia, Asthma, Bronchitis, Sinus problems, Colds, Flu, and Fever. It helps with Circulation problems, Rheumatism, Arthritis, Tendonitis, Back, Shoulder, Neck and Muscular Pains, Menstrual problems, PMS, Migraine, Headaches, and Sports Injuries.
Some people in the skin care world say toners are not necessary; others say they are must have’s in a daily skin care routine. It is often better to decide whether or not a toner can be a helpful or useful product on a case by case approach.
There are different types of toners with different benefits. Several of the primary benefits of using a toner include: 1) they remove residue left behind by cleansers, 2) they restore the skin’s natural pH after cleansing, 3) they hydrate the skin, 4) they have a temporary tightening effect on both the skin and the pores, and 5) they help certain skin conditions, depending on the ingredient.
Toners can be applied to the face with a cotton pad or can be sprayed directly onto the skin.
At Zama Massage Therapeutic Spa we have several different toners that we use and recommend for different skin types and skin concerns.
Moxie Organic Rose Water Tonic - Many people think of toners as having astringent properties. This is not always true. Some types of toners can be used to hydrate the skin throughout the day. At Zama we often recommend our clients with drier skin types keep the Moxie Rose Water Tonic near them during the day – in their purse, in the car, at their desk. Anytime you feel a bit dry or tight, immediately soothe and hydrate your skin with a lightly moisturizing spritz. This type of toner can be a low maintenance, easy way to hydrate the skin without feeling heavy or oily.
ilike Organic Skincare Rosehip Toner - As noted above some toners have more of an astringent property. This one does. This particular toner is a great option for sensitive skin that is acne prone. This toner works to reduce oil production and soothe irritated skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties and also works to tighten the skin causing pores to appear smaller.
Zama Massage won Best of Citysearch Spa & Beauty! This year, our local scouts browsed their way through
Portland and nominated hundreds of the city's best spa and beauty spots. After two weeks of voting,
Zama received the most votes for best Massage in Portland.
Should Men Get Facials?
In one word – yes!
Men deal with aging skin, pigmentation issues, acne and dry skin, just as women do. However, men typically have thicker skin, are more sensitive, produce more oil and have larger pores than women. Shaving also presents some male specific concerns including ingrown hairs, dryness and razor burn.
So why should a man get a facial?
You are pretty much guaranteed a more thorough cleaning than you get at home – one that will work to remove buildup and debris that can cause blackheads and acne. Hot steam towels will be incorporated into the treatment and can actually help to treat and prevent a common condition called “falliculitis” or razor bumps. An exfoliation step in the facial will work to even and smooth skin tone and a mask will help absorb excess oil and tighten pores. A proper level of moisturizer will be applied to restore an ideal amount of hydration to the skin. Your esthetician will also incorporate extensive massage of the scalp, face, neck, shoulders, hands and arms which will stimulate circulation and blood flow, relax nerves and muscles, increase oxygen, help to detoxify the skin and promote a smoother, healthier, younger looking complexion. Based on your skin type, your esthetician will help you decide on the best at home skin care routine. It doesn’t have to be complicated or involve a lot of products. It doesn’t have to smell like flowers or perfume. Zama carries straightforward, no fluff, skin care product created for male skin types.
Men, you have skin. It is the largest organ of your body. It does a lot for you. Take some time to return the favor.
Razor burn occurs when the skin becomes irritated from shaving. Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicle itself. Both of these skin issues can be problematic for men. Razor burn can typically be prevented by addressing improper shaving techniques such as using a different shaving lotion, a fresh razor, a change in pressure and slowing down. Folliculitis, however, is a little bit more difficult to correct and treat. It is often caused by hairs growing under the skin rather than growing straight up out of the hair follicle.
Skin can become irritated, itchy, red, and in some cases even become infected and form small pus filled bumps similar to pimples. Men with thick or curly hair are more prone to have this issue. Dry or dehydrated skin can also contribute to the problem.
One technique that can help prevent these conditions is to incorporate a quick, easy exfoliating routine before and after shaving. Exfoliating before shaving removes dead skin cells, reducing the potential for ingrown hairs and allowing the razor to glide across the skin smoothly and decrease the risk of the razor snagging or grabbing, causing razor burn. Exfoliating after shaving helps to prevent pores and follicles from becoming congested with any residue from shaving and also helps to gently remove any remaining surface skin that might prevent hairs just below the skin from growing up through the follicle rather than turning back down and becoming trapped under the skin.
ilike Organic Skincare’s Mineral Exfoliating Wash is a great pre-shave option as it works to soften and dissolve the dead surface skin. The ilike Organic Skincare’s Rosehip Exfoliator is a gentle but effective scrub that can be used after shaving. The Rosehip Exfoliator also helps to soften the skin to allow the hair better access to growing straight up through the follicle, but it also provides an antiseptic effect to relieve inflamed skin. Incorporating these two products into your routine does not require a lot of time. Both can be done with in a matter of seconds, saving you hours and days of irritation.
“Some physician suggest that stress may be responsible for 75% of all diseases in the western world including skin diseases (e.g., psoriases and eczema), headaches and migraines, digestion disorders, high blood pressure and heart-related disease, as well as backache and muscle pain, poor eyesight and depression…a solution is to find ways to manage the stressors..one way is the use of massage therapy.” -Stretch Dowse, MD, 1887
Massage therapy has the ability to bring healing to our bodies. The concepts and benefits of massage are often only associated with the larger muscles in the body such as our backs, hips, legs, neck, shoulders, etc. Massage is also beneficial and healing to our face and skin as well.
Some of the many benefits of facial massage include 1) stimulating circulation and blood flow, 2) increasing oxygen, 3) releasing toxins trapped between tissues and muscles, 4) relaxing nerves and muscles, 5) increasing lymphatic flow and 6) hydrating the skin by helping nutrients penetrate to a deeper layer of the skin. Every single one of these benefits result in a smoother, healthier looking complexion.
At Zama, our highly trained estheticians recognize the importance and value of massage. They have been trained to incorporate extensive massage of the scalp, face, neck, shoulders, hands and arms into every facial treatment. Our estheticians are able to adjust pressure based on your preference allowing you to leave a treatment feeling as though you just received a deep tissue massage. Our estheticians have also been trained in manual lymphatic drainage massage, which focuses on using very light pressure to drain inflammation from the skin. This type of massage is extremely effective when working with acne and other inflamed skin types.
We’d like to challenge our readers and clients to begin to stretch their understanding regarding the benefits and application of massage. Come experience a facial with one of our estheticians and see for yourself the change in tone and texture of your skin as a result of this power healing tool – therapeutic massage.

The journey to parenthood is a fun, challenging and exciting time for both mother and father. This journey doesn’t come without aches and pains. During the forty weeks of gestation the female body goes through many changes and have heard some people refer to this time as 9 months of Spa time.
During each trimester of pregnancy massage can be received, provided mother and baby are in good health and there are no significant risks to the pregnancy. If the pregnancy is a risk pregnancy it is best to consult with a physician and bring in a prescription for massage therapy services. During each trimester massage will be administered in different ways regarding to lying on the table, to depth of pressure and areas that can or cannot be massaged according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.
During this exciting time women will go through many emotional and physical changes. Receiving massage during this time is helpful and will provide a serene environment for the mother to be, to escape, relax and potentially get some much needed rest. The benefits of taking this time for you are priceless. It has been known that massage can help relieve anxiety, lower blood pressure, increase mental clarity and potentially lead to better night’s sleep. Your body is working 24/7 growing a baby and it only makes sense that you may suffer from exhaustion and increased anxiety during this time of significant change. Do yourself, your partner and the baby a favor and take time now for you. It will help to make the pregnancy more enjoyable and relaxed.
Our staff is trained to avoid many areas in the body according to Traditional Chinese Medicine that could induce labor. These areas include the ankles, lower leg, shoulders and low back. We will provide a full body massage and will massage those tired feet, shoulders, hips and legs all in a safe manner. The comfort and safety of the baby and the mother are at the fore front of our minds.
Once the baby is born our bodies go through even more aches and pains along with mental and emotional changes and exhaustion. It is important to take any moment that is given, to allow yourself some time away from the new baby. The first three months seem to be the most exhausting with the 24 hour feeding schedule and hopefully the baby is working on his/her nights. It is important for everyone to get rest especially the mam. The happiest family moments are when both mother and baby are well rested.
Common areas that mothers experience pain are in the neck/shoulders from breast feeding or bottle feeding along with the constant looking down at the baby, lengthens the back of the neck muscles and shortens the front of the neck muscles causing pain. The shoulders experience some pain from holding the baby in a certain position for extended periods of time. Many mothers also experience low back pain due to the oblique muscles getting stretched during pregnancy. Massage can help mothers release some of this muscle tension, may help alleviate anxiety, stress and potentially help you to sleep at night. The staff will also help you find ways to manage the stress and aches and pain at home in between sessions.
The first year of bringing in a new life is an exciting and exhausting time for both parents. Make sure to find and make the time for you separately and together as a couple. Zama has many ways to help you find ways to reconnect as a couple or just reconnect you to yourself.
Magnetic Skin Therapy: The effects of magnetism on our body
As electromagnetic systems, our bodies exist in balance between and under the influence of negative and positive magnetic forces. The Earth’s crust exerts a powerful negative magnetic field, while during the day we experience the Sun’s opposite, positive magnetic force. At night, the Earth’s negative magnetic energy increases cellular oxygen, encourages deep restorative sleep, supports biological healing, reduces inflammation and relieves pain. But when the Sun comes up, its positive magnetic energy decreases cellular oxygen, stimulates wakefulness, inhibits biological healing, increases pain, and can increase inflammation.
So, magnetic energy enters our body from the Earth’s own natural magnetic field, and it charges our body cells. The human body itself is an electromagnetic machine. Each body cell has a positive and a negative field and physical and mental functions from the brain and central nervous system. Moreover, all life – plant and animal, including human – exists in and responds to the magnetic field of the Earth. For instance, Earth’s magnetism activates the enzyme system in fruits and vegetables that causes normal ripening. And homing pigeons are magnetically guided back to the coop.
In modern world, more and more factors have an effect on the magnetic charge of our cells, either inactivating the magnetism or putting it into stagnation. These effects include reinforced concrete buildings, elevators, computers, microwave ovens and other household appliances, cars, high voltage electric cables etc.
Scientific medicine is currently in a state of rapid change, which has increased the use of magnetic therapy in many fields of medicine. Over 4,000 medical and scientific papers have been published on the use of magnetism. Experiments at Loma Linda University, M.I.T., and several European universities have proven that certain magnetic devices increase the blood flow. Based on several theories and numerous researches scientists agree that magnetic therapy accelerates the healing process by: (1) relief of pain and inflammation; (2) stimulation of tissue; (3) increased blood circulation; (4) increased oxygen to the tissues; (5) rehabilitation, relaxation. Most people have heard and many have used magnetic therapy to treat muscular and skeletal pain, arthritis, sleep disorders, menstrual pain, headaches, toothaches etc, but you may wonder how magnetic
therapy affects the skin…
The effects of Magnetic Therapy on the skin
Magnets have shown many regulating and beneficial effects on the skin restoring its normal tone and color. From the standpoint of biophysics, magnetic therapy polarizes anions and cations. That is, the tissue salts are brought from a state of inactivity and stagnation to order and alignment within the cells and tissues. Environmental effects or damages depolarize the skin cells. Magnetic stimulation of the iron containing red blood cells gets the tissue fluids flowing again, waste products are removed, edema and congestion is regulated, inflammation is decreased, and so cell metabolism soon reverts back to normal.
When part of the problem is the lack of vascular flow and a disturbance of neural tissues, magnetic therapy normalizes these cellular activities. In other words – opens the way for proper nutrients that were not getting to the cells. This is how magnetic therapy has a positive effect on regenerating skin cells and smoothing lines (anti-aging treatments), reducing inflammation(acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis treatments) or detoxifying (cellulite treatments).
In addition to the above, magnetic energy has another important effect. The pineal gland in the center of our head controls hormones, enzymes and immune functions, and is itself a magnetic organ containing magnetite crystals. It is acutely sensitive to magnetic energy and produces its most important and characteristic substance, the sleep hormone melatonin, almost entirely during the night when the Earth’s negative magnetic field is dominant. High levels of melatonin are necessary for adequate sleep. In turn, human growth hormone, which is produced by the hypothalamus as we sleep, appears to be strongly influenced by melatonin levels. And human growth hormone is the controlling factor in hair, skin and muscle mass. As we age, we produce less of these essential hormones. So it may be no exaggeration to say that magnetic stimulation of the pineal
gland could slow the aging process. This is the explanation why many people experience that their hair and skin become healthier as a result of magnetic therapy. Some people show signs of hair returning to its normal color. Because of the increase of human growth hormone, aging clients typically show an increased rate of hair and nail growth, as well as slowing of the aging process of the skin. And this is the reason why we recommend the evening hours as the best time for the use of ilike Magnetic Skin Therapy to stimulate cell growth of aging skin.
Other beneficial effects of ilike organic skin care Magnetic Skin Therapy
Within the range of the magnetic field, all parts of the body are penetrated equally; hence one can experience relief from headache, toothache or back pain when receiving facial or back treatments with ilike organic skin care Magnetic Skin Therapy. (Although the product has not been reviewed by the FDA for medical purposes.) And while applying magnetic therapy to the face, the pineal gland is also within the magnetic field.
You may ask how the Magnetic Skin Therapy product fits into the ilike organic skin care world of herbal medicine. Besides the magnetic powder, the ilike Magnetic Skin Therapy treatment also contains nutrient rich herbs. Elderflower softens and smoothes, Locust flower heals, Horsetail, Yarrow and Lavender calm and soothe the skin, Walnut Leaf is anti-inflammatory, Lemon Grass refreshes and tightens, while Castor Oil hydrates.
On top of the beneficial herbal ingredients, magnetic therapy is as natural as nature itself. Without drugs or chemical ingredients, it influences the healing and regenerative powers already within the genetic makeup of our skin cells. And that is a truly holistic approach to healthy skin!

This is an excellent cleanser for oily, acne and sensitive skin that is prone to irritation and inflammation. It provides a gentle, yet deep cleanse that reduces irritation and inflammation while gently removing excess build up and impurities. Each application works to slightly soften and remove the dead surface layer of skin. It has a slight drying and antiseptic effect as it moderates oil production. It works to control Rosacea by tightening the blood vessels under the skin. Due to its anti inflammatory and anti itching properties it is a great choice for skin prone to eczema and/or psoriasis. It is very effective at helping calm and sooth inflamed follicles and ingrown hairs due to waxing or shaving, thereby making it a great choice for male skin as well.
A little goes a very long way with this cleanser! To use mix ½ to 1 pump of cleaner with water in hands. Apply and massage into skin with fingertips for 1 to 3 minutes in circular motion covering the entire face and neck and avoiding eye area. Remove completely with a damp face towel or rinse with water. Use 1-2 times daily. You can expect one bottle of this cleanser to last 9-10 months or longer. It is very concentrated and packed with nutrients geared towards cleansing and calming your skin.
Ichthammol: Also known as ammonium bituminosulphonate. It is a product of natural origin obtained in the first step by dry distillation of sulphur-rich oil shale. It is used in medicine as a remedy for treating some forms of skin diseases, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. It is commonly used in an ointment as a “drawing slave”, it also has anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and fungicidal properties.
Lavender Oil: Lavender oil has a calming effect which may aid in relaxation and the reduction of anxiety. It may be used as a topical antiseptic and pain reliever. Lavender has anti-inflammatory, refreshing, tightening and bacteriostatic effects to the skin.
Flaxseed Oil: Flaxseed oil contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseeds themselves contain lignans, a class of phytoestrogens considered to have antioxidant and cancer preventing properties. Flax is very healing. It helps metabolize oil, which plays a role in collagen and elastin production, as well as strengthening the skin.
Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 helps with certain circulatory problems, such as varicose veins and Rosacea. Omega-6 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids, which means that they are essential to human health but cannot be made in the body. For this reason, they must be obtained from food. Together omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development, including that of the skin.
Vitamin F: To the skin, it brings suppleness and a youthful appearance. Vitamin F is needed for healthy growth of cell membranes. Eczema may be indicated when deficient in Vitamin F.
This innovative slimming and detox system takes advantage of FAR infrared light for its unique body penetrating ability. This 4 zone system uses radiant heat to improve blood and lymph circulation, allowing oxygen and nutrients to be more efficiently absorbed and utilized. Because this light can penetrate, refract, radiate, and reflect it can push past the subcutaneous tissues and be perceived as heat by the body to increase circulation as well as reactivate normal cell function.
The Sudatonic System is 7x more effective than a traditional sauna, speeding up the natural process of toxin elimination through perspiration. The barrier cream that is used is made primarily of essential oils and is massaged into the skin prior to the wrap. This cream makes it more difficult for the body to perspire. In turn, the lipocytes (fat cells) are forced to release the fatty acids that provide the extra energy needed to push perspiration through the skins surface, depleting stored fat. Once the body has reached the desired temperature, the cardiovascular and metabolic rates rise, and the heart can receive a workout similar to a 6 mile run that just 30 min in the Sudatonic wrap can provide, and up to 4,000 calories can be burned.
With repeated use, the stimulated circulation also improves hormone absorption so the body can better communicate with itself, and among many other benefits, create a natural equilibrium between fat storage and fat elimination. Skin tone, elasticity, and cellulite also benefit greatly from the increased oxygen and nutrients. Some skin conditions can be alleviated with regular use like psoriasis, eczema, and acne. This deeply relaxing treatment is also great for stress relief, sore joints, and stiff muscles. You will leave invigorated and renewed.

Over the past few months our lead esthetician, Jen Meller, has been busy developing our esthetics department. Our goal from the beginning has been to offer the best, most effective facials in the city at an affordable price. We have selected quality products and re-created our facial menu with these goals in mind. We are so excited with the direction this department is moving and the treatments that we are now offering.
We are now working with two different product lines to help us more effectively address your skin care needs:
ilike – Based in Hungary, ilike products are made in small batches from organically grown, handpicked herbs, fruits and vegetables. ilike uses handmade pulps versus extracts in order to retain the full concentration and power of the herbal ingredient. You will immediately experience the rich, deeply penetrating effects of the ilike products, as well as their magnificent aromas and colors!
Moxie Organix – From Walla Walla, Washington, this local, organic, vegan product line was created so you would have skin care products you feel good about putting on your skin. All products are made by hand, nothing is mass produced and everything is made fresh. You can rest assured with this line that your skin care concerns are being addressed with pure, safe and effective ingredients.
In addition to our customized facials we are now offering some great specialized treatments:
The Anti Aging Peeling Facial is a layered treatment. The first layer is a fruit acid peel used to dissolve dead cells from the skin surface while vitalizing, detoxifying and revealing a new layer of skin underneath. The Hungarian Paprika Gel Treatment is layered over the fruit acid peel and creates heat to stimulate blood flow and promote collagen production. This treatment is great for all skin types, including sensitive and rosacea prone skin.
The Oxygenating & Lightening Facial evens skin tone and minimizes sun and age spots. Noticeable changes in texture and pore sizes occur with just one treatment. This treatment includes the Yogurt Power Peel, which is a fast, intense peel with no down time, redness, drying or peeling. The cucumber and parsley treatment used in this treatment works to lighten the skin as well as stimulate lymphatic circulation and cell metabolism.
In addition to our facials we are also so pleased to announce some additions to our enhancement menu. Acutonics and LED Light Therapy can be added to your facial for only $10. LED treatment series are available for purchase as well.
This is an exciting time for Zama’s esthetics department. We are growing this department with you in mind. We will soon be adding facial cupping and magnetic therapy facials to the menu as well. You will be amazed at the before and after results with these face lifting treatments!
If you have any questions or concerns, ideas or suggestions please do not hesitate to let us know. Our lead esthetician, Jen Meller, is always interested to hear from you. Feel free to call 503-281-0278 or email her directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Recently, I had our new Holistic Esthetician Jen Meller give me a facial. Normally I have dry skin and now being six months pregnant my skin seems to be even dryer. I was thinking that I needed a Detox Facial because the skin was so dry and started talking with Jen about receiving this service. Jen took one look at my skin and informed me that was exactly what we should not do because the Detox Facial is about pulling oils out of the skin and my skin needed to be hydrated. I'm surprised even 3 days later my skin still feels very hydrated and refreshed. If you have never had a facial or you are looking for someone new, you should try our skin care specialists, Jen and Emily have a wealth of information to pass on to you. They are very capable of talking about any skin care issue that you maybe experiencing and their massage techniques are above par.

I often hear Zama guests get very attached to their therapist. "Why change when you know this works" is what I hear people say the most if their favorite therapist is not available and sometimes people will wait weeks to get back in with their favorite therapist or esthetician.
For myself I find it useful to see many different massage therapists over the course of a year. I'm very loyal to all of them but massage is like a work out. We must mix it up. Everyone knows that if you do the same work out regime time and time again your body does not benefit as much as it would if you changed your work out up. I find that getting massages is the same thing and seeing the same therapist over and over who does not change up the routine will give you minimal result.
Zama is such a great place because we have many therapists who can deliver results no matter who they see. Our focus is pain relief and all of our therapists here have many different years and many different tools in their tool box. We are cautious about saying that any one of us will meet all of your needs therefore we encourage you to see other massage therapists who can meet those needs.
Currently, I see one therapist who works only on my shoulder. It is all myofascial release massage, craniosacral and working on resetting my motor skills with that shoulder. I have experienced great success with a shoulder that has been giving me pain for the last three years. But sometimes I still just want that deep tissue/Ashiatsu oil massage for my whole body so I see a few different therapists for that. Other times I want to experience some good stretching so I get Thai massage and have a few therapists who are trained in that modality.
Hopefully this will help you overcome seeing someone else if your favorite therapist is not available. At Zama we are here to help you find the right massage therapist who can help manage your stress and pain. Call today to speak to one of specialists! 503.281.0278

When someone is looking for a massage therapist, they often have many questions. Should I see a male or a female massage therapist? Will a male massage therapist make me feel comfortable and secure during the massage session? I like a deep massage will a female therapist be able to go deep enough for me? It is important to choose the right therapist who will make you feel the most comfortable and who will listen to your needs. You will benefit the most from your massage if you are comfortable during your session.
At Zama massage, people often ask us to help them pick a therapist, so we ask them the following questions:
What are you looking for in a massage today? Are you looking to just relax or
are you dealing with chronic pain? What are your immediate needs as well as your long term goals from a massage?
This will help us find you the right massage therapist. In addition, you can always
read about the therapist's trainings on our website.
People tend to get caught up in the “should I choose a male or
female therapist?" You should only see a therapist who will make you
comfortable; however, in my experience I have received some of the most
profound massages from those who may not have been my first choice, male
or female. I encourage you to step outside of your first choice and open
yourself up to a healing experience that may be the perfect fit for you.
Please make sure to communicate anything that makes you feel uncomfortable
during your session. This is very important so that the therapist can meet your
expectations and needs during your massage session.
Deep Tissue and Sports Massage can mean very different things to different people.
Most people ask for Deep Tissue Massage just for the level of pressure.
Our massage therapists are trained to work deeper levels of muscle tissue
using techniques that feel light but actually create a deep sense of relief. These
techniques include contract/relax and myofascial - techniques that
take time, move slowly and require participation from the client. These
techniques are designed to deeply reach your nervous system allowing your muscles to relax
and let go of their holding pattern.
With Sports massage, many people think it is just mainly for before or after participating in a sports event. Pre-event massage should consist of stretching and massage which moves blood towards
the heart. Post-event massage should include some stretching but the main focus
should be on deeper massage which focuses on moving blood into the deep
layers of muscle tissue. Sports massage is also available for those who
need a more focused massage on an area that is prone to injury. This
type of Sports massage is for those who are in a normal workout routine
and need constant maintenance.
Regular massage is very important for everyone at all levels of activity.
Hopefully this has cleared up some questions for you when you’re choosing
between Deep Tissue or Sports Massage. If you have more questions please
ask your therapist what is the best style of massage for you or give us a ring.
Thai massage is just the answer. Thai massage uses Asana's yoga posses to assist you into a deep therapeutic stretch and relaxation. Come see why everyone loves Thai massage so much.
This offer is good only with Jarrod, Juniper, Lynn and Troy. Please mention this offer when booking your appointment. Looking forward to seeing you soon.
This year the American Massage Therapy Association conference was right here in Portland, Oregon at the Convention Center, October 19-22nd 2011. Lynn Bukowski and Genevra Fitts-Cardoso attended the exhibits to see all the new self care tools that have come on the market as well as new massage techniques and modalities. Some of our favorite new techniques we tried at the conference were massage cupping, kinesio-taping and microcurrent positional tunia. I personally (Lynn) experienced a significant amount of pain relief in my neck and shoulder, caused by a motor vehicle accident a year ago, from the above three modalities. I am very excited to start training in these modalities bringing much needed pain relief to Zama clients.
For a number of years, I've been using The Reclamation Project as a way to focus my work.
While much of my recent carving, painting and installation continues to be grounded in
environmental aesthetics--using the beauty of art to dialogue with audiences about recycling
and reconnecting with nature--my desires for reclamation extend to my general feelings
about how society discards concepts, fads and much of which it feels to be difficult or
uncomfortable or transitory. Currently, I'm exploring new ways to increase cultural
intelligibility and understanding.
Thus, I discuss gentrification by making portraits out of photos found in dumpsters
in up-and-coming neighborhoods.
I comment on intelligibility and cultural spread by using Chinese characters and
I attempt to demystify the art process by comfortably discussing my lack of formal
art training, by instructing anyone on the specifics of my techniques and by listing
the materials that go into each work rather than picking a canonically approved medium
I make and show art in galleries, cafes, art fairs, street fairs, public buildings,
private yards, homeless encampments, beaches, offices, telephone poles and anywhere else
that will allow me to explore differing types of audience interaction, therefore, different
dialogues about my concerns.
In the coming year I will be touring a show of fishbirds swimming around Portland landmarks
to discuss layers of understanding about our local political process and I will be the Artist
Residence at the Oregon School of the Deaf to help the students explore issues with communication
between multiple languages intersecting in a common culture.
Remember -- Reclaim -- Restore
Lynn Bukowski and Genevra Fitts-Cardoso attended the Day Spa Association Conference right here in Portland, Oregon held on September 24-25th 2011. The conference's focus was on "How spa meets the wellness the fusion". This is such a great topic given the current health care reform bill that is still under debate. With so many Americans unable to get health care or not wanting to spend their dollars on co-pays, spas and massage therapists are the front runners for people's ailments. This is why we are seeing so many medical spas opening up and more doctors like chiropractors, naturopaths, acupuncturists, RN, LPN's and physician assistants joining spas and massage clinics to be the resource for the spa goers.
The conference was inspirational and on the cutting edge of spa/wellness innovation. Keep your eyes opened to see how Zama will bring these ideas into our facility enhancing your massage and health needs.
Genevra Fitts-Cardoso LMT and Lynn Bukowski LMT did free massage for participants of the Sunday Parkways event here in Portland this weekend. Thank you Fit Right NW for the invitation. There were many Portlanders out enjoying the sunny, dry weather. I saw many double decker bikes, people with fairy wings, a pirate and a person dressed as a skeleton. Plus, we saw our own Lisa Mertz LMT and her husband enjoying the Sunday Parkways event. There are many food vendors and tons of family fun in the park. If you are looking for something fun to do over the summer this is one event you should add to your calender. Make sure you stop on over at the Fit Right NW tent and check out some new shoes and get a massage from the Zama LMT's. We hope to see you at the next Sunday Parkways event!
Get a 60 minute or longer massage with Rory today until 3pm!

Erika has always been led to the health care field and found her place with Massage Therapy. She graduated from the Oregon School of Massage in December of 2008. Erika’s training is centered around Swedish massage and deep tissue massage with some training in Shiatsu, Thai massage, trigger point therapy, and hot stone massage. She pulls from these modalities to create a unique massage experience where strong value is placed on adapting each visit to fit the current needs of her clients.
Recently Erika’s passion and education have led her to the amazing world of Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy. She is extremely enthusiastic about this highly beneficial style of massage. Erika has also completed further training in massage for people living with cancer, and has spent time at Oregon Health Science University’s Oncology unit providing gentle touch massage for patients receiving chemotherapy infusions. This experience confirmed her belief in the power of touch and it’s ability to comfort and support others.
It is her intention to help others experience the many benefits massage has to offer, and hopes to be a resource for her clients.
