Our Model

We build the capacity of rural communities to advance their own comprehensive well-being

Lwala believes that communities have untapped potential to solve the world’s most pressing challenges. We connect community innovation with university-backed research to tackle the multidimensional causes of poor health. We are driven by our core values: community-driven, excellence, dignity, innovation, integrity, and neighborliness.

Systems Change

Lwala’s community-led health model is uniquely positioned to transform health systems. Based on our evidence of impact, the Ministry of Health invited Lwala to expand community-led health principles to the 1.1 million people in Migori County, Kenya. Together, we are building a “county model” of community-led health. And, we are working with coalitions at local, national and global levels to transform the wider health system.

Community-Led Health

Community-led health has four key pillars: community committees, community health workers (CHWs), health centers, and data. Core to the model is the transformation of traditional birth attendants to professionalized CHWs. We recruit, pay, supervise, and digitally empowered CHWs to extend high-quality care to every home.

Data Driven

Our digitally empowered community health workers track individual health outcomes, and receive real-time decision-support. This is paired with rigorous research and evaluation, led by the Vanderbilt Institute of Global Health. This data enables our team and government policymakers to make evidence-based decisions.
