Heart Opening Valentine's Day Gift Guide:

Chocolate:

Yes, chocolate is undeniably one of the most commonly thought of gifts. There is a reason for this! Chocolate triggers brain chemicals that stimulate feelings of love and sexual desire. Not only is chocolate an aphrodisiac, but it also contains many healthy promoting properties as well.

The higher the cocoa content, the more health benefits there are. Cocoa is rich in anti-oxidants that contribute to lowered cholesterol, improve heart health, and stimulate a positive immune response. Also, cocoa, used topically, protects your skin and pumps it full of vital nutrients.

Valentines GiftWe finish many of our signature packages here at Zama with high quality, vegan truffles made by Missionary Chocolates. They are available for purchase in our spa store and locally made right here in Portland. Go the extra mile with your chocolate gift and purchase artisan chocolates that are high in cocoa content and void of filler ingredients.

Even better, give your chocolate to your loved one as a delectable surprise. Pull the box out after a long walk together, or during a shared cup of tea. Consider bringing it to the bedroom as part of a romantic evening. Wrap it up and place it somewhere unexpected, like on a work station or on the car dash. Make it a pleasurable experience!

Stones & Crystals:

Consider a Valentines gift of stones and crystals! In recent years these earthy treasures have increased in popularity, however they Valentines gifthave always been beloved by those who delight in the fantastic of natural wonders. Stones and crystals are excellent gifts that can be used to add beauty to the home or office and can be used in a variety of ways, from practical to healing to spiritual.

Want to feel like you are inside a large crystal? Come get a treatment in our salt caves!  Surround yourself with ancient slabs of crystallized ancient Himalayan salt stones. The health benefits are many and the beauty loving senses will be pleasurably stimulated.

Stones and crystals have many uses. Some love them simply for their aesthetic and use gems to create artful montages on window sills, bathrooms, bedrooms, altars,  center pieces, or really anywhere. Smooth valentines giftstones and crystals can be used to give massages and or to be held in the hand by tactile users. Many use crystals for their energetic properties and use them to ignite their physic, energetic, and healing abilities.

Dive into the study of precious stones and gems and with your loved one! Make an altar together that you both will enjoy or a smoothed one to massage each other with a carrier oil. Go on a crystal hunt together and decide which speak to both of you. The spirit in which you discover the precious stones you want to bring into your life will add to their value!

Furry friends:

Pets are undoubtedly one of life's biggest joys for many. Dogs, in particular, have been proven to increase one's life span and overall happiness. Yes, pets are an added responsibility, but the work they bring adds to quality of the owner's life. Pets can decrease stress levels and increase a sense of belonging and connection. Dog walking not only improves the owner's health, but also helps you meet others and connect to local community.

Dogs fill your heart with love and make it stronger. Studies show that having a canine companion is linked to lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol, and decreased triglyceride levels, which contribute to better overall cardiovascular health and fewer heart attacks.

A furry friend can be one of the most loving and memorable gifts ever. They joy and love created by bonding with a pet is undoubtedly inspiring and heart opening!

Spa Day!

Spa days are incredible gifts for the mind, body, and spirit. Uplift your loved one with a trip to a day spa for relaxation, pampering, and a therapeutic touch. The old adage, "you can't pour from an empty cup" remains true. The responsibilities of life add up and tire us out. There is nothing quite like a spa day to valentines giftmelt away the tension and stress of everyday living. Helping your loved one relax and receive healing touch and beautifying care will fill their cup back up and help bring on the love!

You can even book spa days together! From couple's massage to side by side pedicures, a trip to the day spa together is a sure way to bond and open up to one another. Here at Zama we have an extensive menu for both couple's services and personalized treatments.  Help your loved one open up and get inspired with the gift of therapeutic touch.

Live music:

Check out your local activities calendar for live music or special DJ experiences. Music uplifts our spirit and connects us to our body. Music creates an environment that connects us to one another. Whether your loved one likes to dance, tap their foot, sit back and experience, music will undoubtedly lift them up!

Additionally, going out together and trying new activities together increase neural pathways for love. According to Dr. Arthur Aron, a psychology professor who directs the Interpersonal Relationships Laboratory at the State University of New York at Stony Heart Opening Valentine's Gift GuideBrook, "partners who regularly share new experiences report greater boosts in marital happiness than those who simply share pleasant but familiar experiences."

Our recommendation, head out for a night of music and dance together! Delight in the music and doing something new that will create bonding. Just down the street from Zama is Aztec Willie's, where they regularly host Latin Dance nights with dance lessons.

If live music is more your thing, Portland is packed with opportunities. Pick up a copy of the Willamette Weekly for smaller local offerings or head on-line to Ticketmaster and take a look at the many larger shows that come through town. Add some music to your shared experience and open up the love!

Does it hurt to stand or sit?  Experiencing painful tingling, numbness, or radiating sharp pain down your backside? Does this nagging pain seem unstoppable?  Sciatica may be what is ailing you.

pain, back pain, sciaticaWhat is sciatica or sciatic nerve pain?

Sciatica is common.  40% of us have experienced it at some point. Many are unaware that this common “back pain” is caused when the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the human body, is irritated or pinched.

Sciatica is often caused by a compression or bulge in the lumber spine. Spinal injuries and degeneration, issues with the sacroiliac joint, and tightness of the piriformis muscle are other causes of sciatica.

The sciatic nerve branches from your lower back to your hips, buttock and down both legs. It is most common for someone to only experience pain radiating down one side of the body and not both at the same time. The pain you may experience will most often feel like a pain in your low back to buttock area which will radiate down the hip into your legs and may feel like a sharp stabbing, burning or a throbbing that can also create numbness or tingling in the legs and feet. Many people may feel weak or have difficulty moving their leg. This pain can be a constant or shooting pain that may come and go throughout the day.

Who is at risk for sciatica?

Those who have postural issues, diabetes, sit for prolonged periods, and lift large loads are most likely suffer from this painful condition. Women often experience this condition during pregnancy due to pressure being created on the sciatic nerve from the developing uterus.

How can we prevent ourselves from experiencing sciatica?

Forming these daily habits can help you and keep you in the best possible physical condition to avoid sciatica:

  1. Regular exercise. Keep your back strong and pay attention especially to your core strength. The muscles in your abdomen and lower back are incredibly important for proper posture and alignment of your spine. Do your crunches!!
  2. Use proper posture. The average adult sits for a majority of the day whether it be driving or working. Sitting in a hunched over position or with your legs crossed is a great way to make yourself susceptible to the excruciating experience of sciatica. A great way to improve your posture; take a small rolled up towel and place it between your lower back and the back of your chair to maintain your normal back curve. This can help in working toward a healthier core strength and posture.
  3. Good body mechanics. If you are in a place where you may be standing for an extended period, find an item that will allow you to keep one foot elevated, maybe a stool or box. When you are moving or lifting things, lift with your legs and refrain from using back strength to get the job done. Move your spine straight up and down, keep your spine straight (not hunched over) while lifting an item from a low point and keep the load close to your body.
  4. Take breaks. We sit much more than we should. Try and implement small breaks into your day of sitting to get out and enjoy the sunshine for 3-5 minutes several times a day. Adding stretching into this break will help you in your journey of being sciatica free.
  5. Whole foods and anti-inflammatory diet. Focusing on a high quality diet that limits white sugar, white flour, and fried foods will help prevent and ease sciatica. Foods that decrease inflammation like turmeric, berries, omega-3s, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and fruits and vegetables are perfect for preventing and reducing pain.

How can we relieve sciatic pain?

The upside of sciatic nerve pain is that 80%-90% of people heal with time and rest without prescriptions or surgery. Although this condition can heal on its own, there are many natural ways that we can treat sciatica ourselves.

stretch, back pain, sciatica, foam roll

  1. Hot and cold therapy. Heat on the painful area will loosen and relax tense muscle. Add cold therapy to reduce swelling. Switching between the two can be beneficial in reducing the pain caused by sciatica.
  2. Keep yourself active! Moving around as much as possible will keep your body from stiffening and worsening the condition. Motion reduces inflammation.
  3. Stretch! Stretching your legs, back, hips and pectoral muscles can reduce pain almost immediately. Foam rolling is an excellent way to stretch your muscles and roll out muscular stiffness.
  4. Get a massage. Massage therapy has been proven to have a number of benefits for back pain, including increased blood circulation, muscle relaxation, and release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain relievers). Add cupping to your massage for nerve pain. Massage cupping is the most natural approach to sciatica relief. Adding cupping to your massage promotes enhanced blood circulation and muscle relaxation while decreasing inflammation and promoting detoxification in the affected areas.

We're Getting in the Halloween Spirit at Zama Massage Therapeutic Spa

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 8.03.22 PM

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is right around the corner and we're getting in the holiday spirit with several seasonal specials here at the spa, not to mention, the recent Grand Opening of our HaloTherapy Salt Caves! The salt caves have been very popular with our regular clientele and now we're spreading the word to people who may not be as familiar with Zama yet. We recently started airing a television commercial and Zama owner, Genevra Cardoso, made a guest appearance on KATU's AM Northwest just last week.

Halloween Candy Buy Back Programs

After you run around from house to house helping your little monsters exorcise their demons, you may be wondering what to do with all of that coma inducing candy. Several local communities have "Buy-Back" programs, often offering up to $1.00 per pound for your little critter's booty. Some of it will be eaten, sure, but just one look at the amount of calories in an average Halloween haul and you'll want to make sure the bulk of it goes anywhere besides your family's tummies. For information on local, Portland area buy-back programs, click here.

Zero Gravity Chairs in our HaloTherapy Salt Caves

You may know about the new massage services offered in our innovative HaloTherapy salt caves but did you know that you can just come and relax during our "drop-in" hours? When inhaled, the saline vapor in our salt caves purifies the lungs, drawing out mucus and impurities, a process which was first recognized in natural salt caverns dating back to ancient times. The therapeutic inhalation of salt is made possible with the use of our state of the art halo-generator, which produces micro-sized salt particles. As you inhale the salt into your lungs, it decreases inflammation of  the bronchial passages and helps to fight infection. These natural benefits are highly therapeutic for anyone suffering from allergies, asthma, skin conditions, joint pain, snoring, and more. The HaloTherapy room also creates a negative ion environment that decreases stress, promotes relaxation, and increases an overall sense of well-being.

Sip spicy tea and unwind (fully dressed) during a 45 minute saline therapy salt cave session. Inhale therapeutic salt vapor while you lean back and enjoy the full-body comfort of our Lafuma zero gravity chairs. The ergonomic design offers full body comfort and the resistance levers help keep the chair in an optimal position. "Drop-in" hours begin on the hour, every hour however you must arrive 15 minutes prior to the hour. You can always drop by to see if we have an open chair (we have 6) but it's strongly suggested that you make a reservation to ensure your spot. You can do that online or by calling one of our concierges at the front desk.
